Many different models were produced during the production of the Fiat 500. It is therefore important to check when buying what type of Fiat 500 it is, what type of engine it has, what the original colour was, etc.
Recognition
Under the luggage flap to the left of the petrol tank on the bulkhead is the car’s type plate (see photo) with the chassis number stamped underneath.
This plate gives us the following information:
110 040 is the engine type
150822 is the engine number
110 is the chassis type
149344 is the chassis number, this should match the stamped number
123961 is the spare parts number
672 is the colour of the body
With the chassis number, you can easily find here in which year the Fiat was built. You can also easily determine which type of engine is in the car by looking at the number of the engine, this number can be found on the engine to the left of the suspension of the engine on the rear beam.
New identification plates are available in our shop, you can find them here.

IGM and DGM Numbers Fiat 500 Classic
The IGM number or for that matter the DGM number of a vehicle was issued by the Italian Government to all Italain vehicles. On an Italian frame number the IGM or DGM number appear after the frame number.
DGM means simply Direzione Generale Motorizzazione that is the main place where all the vehicles are tested and they get an homologation.
IGM means Ispettorato Generale Motorizzazione, and is actually the same thing. The following number is a progressive homologation number, and OM is for ‘omologazione’, homologation. Older vehicles have IGM, and more recent ones DGM: in 1967 the name was changed from ‘Ispettorato’ to ‘Direzione’, hence the two different abbreviations.
